Foxbase +/Mac
L.A. Fox is a user group for all
members of the Fox community-- not
just those on the IBM side. Charles
Williams, a local consultant who
practices Foxbase + fMac, has joined
our Steering Committee and will be
taking an active role in the planning
of our meetings and the setting of
direction for the group. Charles has
also agreed to present some of the
applications he has developed for
Foxbase+/Mac in an upcoming
meeting. Since FoxPro owes much of
its unique design to the work done by
Fox Software on Foxbase + fMac
and since Foxbase +/Mac remains a
showcase for design elements still in
FoxPro’s future presentations on
the Mac product should be of interest
even to those with no plans to develop
on that platform.
For Those Who Were
Techno-Bhtzed...
FoxPro is a powerful development
tool, and somewhat programmer-
oriented in spite of an incredibly rich
array of tools for interactive work.
For this reason the FoxPro group
quite naturally attracts sophisticated
programmers. Our May meeting un-
folded at a pretty high technical level,
which was altogether satisfactory to
most who attended. Still, a few folks
got left behind.
If you were one of them: let me
just say, on behalf of the board, that
we intend not to forget you. The Fox
Software user community spans the
enduser-to-programmer continuum
that’s the sort of products Foxbase
and FoxPro are and we hope to
address the entire Fox community.
We hope to do this not just because
we think it’s a nice thing to do, but
because we believe the diversity will
benefit everyone: new users trying to
take fuller advantage of the products;
business people looking for profes-
sional help; consultants looking for
clients; and professional developers
looking for the technological cutting
edge.
Easy For You to Say...
We not only have goals: we have a
plan. It’s a simple plan, designed for
evolution, and we’re open to sugges-
tions. But a plan it is. And here it is:
We plan to design each meeting so
that it has two distinct sections. The
first section will emphasize inspira-
tional and motivational presenta-
tions. No, I don’t mean that we will
be urging you to enter the
foreclosures market, or showing you
how to make big money tracking
down the owners of lost bank ac-
counts for the state of California.
What we’re looking for is more of a
presentation syle than any particular
kind of content. We want you
developers to show us the applica-
tions you’ve built. Expose us to the
business (educational? entertain-
ment?) needs you’ve addressed using
Foxbase and FoxPro. Vendor
presentations, unless of highly tech-
nical add-on products, will probably
go in this half of the meeting.
The second half of the meeting
will be targeted explicitly for
developers. This part of the meeting
will focus on technical topics, and will
include presentations of hair-raising
code, and no-holds-barred question
and answer sessions.
In some cases the presenter for
both halves of the meeting maybe the
same person as will be the case in
our June meeting featuring Richard
Grossman. The first half ofthe meet-
ing will explore ProDemo as an ap-
plication. The second half will take it
apart as a piece of sophisticated
code.
I mentioned that a break will
separate the first and second halves
of the meeting. This break will be of
healthy duration, and will be express-
ly designed to fa.ilitate the network-
ing which for most of you will be the
primary benefit of the group. See you
there!
