The LA Fox Developer
A Newsletter for FoxPro Application Developers in Southern California September 1994
Out and About
[Ed. Note: Chuck Williams’ regular column, LA Fox President’s Column, will return next month.]

DevCon Announcements Sent Out Microsoft sent out their formal, albeit cryptic, announcement/invitations to DevCon last week. The dates are Jan. 16-19, 1995, in San Diego. The invitations were peppered with important- sounding phrases like “All FoxPro Developers Strongly Encouraged to Attend” and “Attendance Priority: Critical”. Registrations fees are $995 before 11/15/94, $1295 after. Although this might seem a little steep, there are a number of reasons to attend:
1.
It’s in your own backyard and within driving
distance. I’m sure last year’s DevCon totaled a lot more when you added in air fare to Florida and all the other miscellaneous expenses. Hotel expenses can even be avoided if you know someone

Looking for a New Home
by Barry R. Lee

As most of you know by now, in August we lost one of our more valuable members, Greg Dunn. Just as important, when we lost Greg, we also lost our meeting place at TRW. So we’re looking for a new place to call home.

At the last board meeting, many options were discussed concerning a new meeting place. Here they are for your review:

1.
Cal Tech, in Pasadena, has a room equipped
much like the room where the Orange County FUG meets, with audio-visual equipment, etc. One of the main drawbacks to holding our meetings at this location is that the board feels they would lose a substantial portion of the membership by relocating there. On the positive side, we would no longer have to struggle to locate overhead LCD projectors and other video equipment.
2.
One of the members could check at their offices
to see if there is an appropriately-sized room that could hold the meeting membership, which has been averaging between thirty and forty people per meeting.
3.
The next option is to check libraries, banks,
savings and loans, etc., for an appropriately-sized meeting room which they would be willing to let out to our group. Often these rooms are free or can be had for a nominal fee.
4.
Public utilities, like SoCalEd, and certain other
industries are required by law to perform public service actions, one of which is to provide meeting places for non-profit groups, which we are. As a matter of fact, the original LA Fox meetings started out this way.
5.
Several members live in condos or apartments

Next LA Fox Meeting Location
The next meeting of LA Fox will be at the Santa Monica Microsoft Offices , located at 1620 26th Street - South Tower - 4th Floor, Santa Monica, CA 90404, on Tuesday, Sept.20, 1994, at 7:30 PM. One of our featured speakers will be Roger Woodsmall, author of “AutoManual” (AM). AM is a piece of software that works with FoxPro to generate end-user documentation automatically. It’s a very useful tool for those developers who either won’t or can’t provide documentation for their systems. Ken Levy, our other featured speaker, will be demonstrating a product called Outreach for Windows by Intergroup Technologies. Outreach allows any Windows program which can call DLLs to access VBX controls. This includes FoxPro 2.x for Windows.
