Out and About (Con't from page 3) and in Orange County). Add to that the following:

Network Companies on the Block. Compaq and Microsoft announced, within hours of each other, their intent to move into the networking market by purchasing, respectively, Net Worth, Inc. and Net- wise, Inc., signifying the realization within the software industry that the stand-alone personal computer is a thing of the past. Compaq is making a major move in developing servers to connect to PCs. Net Worth compliments that goal since they manufacture network switches and hubs. Microsoft, on the other hand, is taking the software approach with Netwise, a developer of software that will connect Windows NT to mainframe computers. This will allow Microsoft to compete directly with Oracle. Which leads to:
The Perilous Prediction Department. I hazard a guess that unless Novell makes a miraculous turnaround and experiences a tremendous influx of cash, it will be a prime takeover target, in the next couple of years, from a larger company, like maybe, perhaps, IBM.

Speaking of IBM. IBM plans to spend $1.4 billion to expand two chip-making facilities in Essonnes, France, and Burlington, VA. $1 billion is earmarked for the French plant to expand manufacturing of the current generation of chips and prepare for the production of 64 megabit chips. The Burhnton plant specializes in the production of microprocessors, embedded controllers, and other logic chips.

Short Takes Intel unveiled their 200 Mhz pentium processor. Bill Gates turned 40. (What would you buy the guy that owns Microsoft?) Apple management continues to experience a turmoil from which it may never recover. Fruit of the Loom will eliminate 3,200 workers from its job force in an effort to streamline operations. (I can’t pass this one up. “Talk about taking it in the shorts!”) IBM announced a “universal” software language that will enable software to run on both MACs and PCs will no emulation interface. Hyundai has upped the ante, in a deal valued at $325 million, in its attempt to take over disk drive manufacturer Maxtor Corp. So far Maxtor is successfully fighting them off. (Thank God!)

People to serve on a Christmas Committee for the Annual LA Fox Christmas Party. Guaranteed to take a lot of time and should be a lot of fun. One short committee meeting should take care of everything.
