developments with FoxPro database applications. He talks about requirements definition, about testing, and about developing in teams. He has observations on object-oriented techniques and reusability, and, being a Mac enthusiast, has comments about the
"Wimp"
(windows, icons, menus, pointing) interface.
Brooks is still an active practitioner, is quite current on the methodologies that have recently come to the fore, and he includes recent comments from the likes of Edward Yourdon, Grady Booch, and Barry Boehm. He speaks strongly about the importance of quality, postulates that “conceptual integrity” is the key to quality, and argues that a strong system architect is the key to that
integrity.
From my own years of experience in mainframe and desktop software development, I recognize many of his points and share many of his convictions. This is not written like a textbook

it is more like a collection of short essays, and the

mixed with enough humor to keep it light. Try it, you’ll like it.
A FoxPro Job Board
Several times over the last severat years we have considered ways to make better connections between people looking for FoxPro developers and our user group members who are looking for either consulting assignments or full time work in FoxPro. It always boils down to finding someone wiVing to take the time to keep track of the opportunities and make the phone calls.
Steve Bradford has recently volunteered to try and make this work. The approach will be as follows
-
I
will notify Steve when I am contacted by someone looking for FoxPro folks. He will keep a database, make the calls, and provide a current list to members who call him. Anyone else who hears of opportunities beyond their own needs can also funnel the information to Steve if you want to share the lead. Members who are searching for work and want their names referred to potential clients can leave a message to that effect with Steve.
Please note carefully that the user group does not recommend on either side, we just make connections
-
that is, when someone requests a programmer, we don’t evaluate the requester, we don’t recommend any particular developer, we don’t
|
discuss qualifications, and we don’t discuss rates
-
we do give the requester a list of names and numbers of members who have specifically asked to be referred, and we make a list of leads available to members when requested.
Steve will also publish a current list of leads in the newsletter. You can reach Steve or his answering machine at 310/548-4783, CID# 73317,2745, Fax 310/514-8320, or talk to him at the user meeting.
(Ed. Note: Steve asked me to relay to the membership that during the next meeting, weW be discussing how to effectively handle this new
service.]
