Spring Conference ‘97 FAQs
by Barry R. Lee
With so much going on during the two days of the conference, what will be the best way of “seeing” it?
Our first suggestion is to find someone you know, either from your area of the country or someone you’ve met at a previous DevCon, who’s going to the conference, and split up the sessions between the two of you. That way, you won’t miss out on any of the “impromptu” notes or the “Oh, by the way, here’s something that isn’t in my session notes” that sometimes occur at these events. That is, of course, providing your partner is a good note-taker. <g> And, as previously mentioned, all “official” conference notes will be available in the notebook that will be handed to you as you register.

What about the sessions? When are they scheduled? When does everything begin?
The conference will have the following general schedule. We will be mailing out booklets, approx. 30 days prior to the event, which will have the details of who’s speaking when, so you’ll have ample time to plan your attendance at the sessions. For those attendees arriving on Friday, there will be early registration Friday evening. During this conference, there will be five tracks going simultaneously (four speaker tracks and a “product-speaker” track). Each session will follow the format of a 60-minute presentation and 15 minutes for Q&A, for a total of 75 minutes per session. Extra time is being allowed during the breaks, rather than just 15 minutes so that yo:i may visit the Trade Show.

Are there User’s Group discounts, or discounts for group registration?
No.

Do you accept credit card payments?
Yes. However, the price reflects a cash discount. Credit card users must pay the full price of $259.

What about hotels and airlines?
- Hotel: We have secured discounted rooms at the rate of $89.00 per room. To get this discount, you must call the LAX Westin directly at (310) 216-5858 (not their “800” number). Be sure to tell them that you are making reservations for the ‘MICROCOMPUTER ENGINEERING SERVICES room block”. This price will be honored 3 days prior and 3 days after the event. You will need a credit card to hold the reservation.

- Airlines: We have secured a 5% discount of any published fares on United or Delta. To get these special rates, you or your travel agent will need to call one of the following phone numbers. United’s meetings desk phone number is 1-800-521-4041. Our meeting ID Code for United is “513DA”. Delta’s meeting desk phone number is 1-800-241-6760. Our file number for Delta is “XHO3I”.
Business Objects (Con’t from page 5)

An additional benefit of such a State class would be to create a method to calculate sales tax for that state. A chain of stores can then easily report their particular state’s sales tax without having to have a separate customized program for each location.

As you can see, OOP utilizing polymorphism correctly, can be very powerful. Also, with a little bit of foresight, creating one more layer of objects can open the door to a tremendous number of opportunities reuse and growth.

VFP Hot Tip
by Michael Meer
Do not use “_VFP” in any of your projects. Always use “_SCREEN” instead. If VFP is not fully installed on the target machines, the program will give the end user an “OLE” error. Although this is usually not a fatal error, it can make the program programmer look bad.

foxtools.fU (Con't from page 4)
Returns: .T. Return Value: Logical

Editor And Window Functions:
A group of functions starting with _Ed... and _W... map to editor and window functions that are exposed in the FoxPro 2.5 Library Construction Kit (a separate product that allows you to extend FoxPro using the C programming language). See the documentation in that product for details of these functions.

It Can’t Get Any Easier.......
We’ve come up with an easy way to submit articles to the LA Fox Developer Newsletter one that has been overlooked for a long time.

You can submit your articles to Barry Lee at CIS# 72723,3422 on Compuserve, or brlee@earthllnk.net.

These articles can be on any FoxPro-related topic, whether it concerns a new technique you’ve discovered, a certain development technique you may favor over others, book reviews, etc. Editor reserves the right to edit or offer constructive comments concerning submitted articles and accepted articles shall be considered to be in the public domain.

The quality of this newsletter really depends on the members that support it, not just read it. And I think we’d all be surprised by the useful information that could be circulated around the membership.

How ‘bout it?
