Out and About (Con't from page 2)

this conference was one of the highlights ot the 1997 “confer-
ence season”, providing a chance to see nationally-known
speakers in a somewhat smaller, more intimate setting. Last
year, the conference drew attendees from New Jersey to The
Phillipines. This time out, the conference is going to be held at
The Doubletree Hotel in Orange County. The conference
WebSite will be up and running shortly, providing all the details
for this great cost-effective event. And, of course, you can
follow all the details right here. So start making plans now to
attend.

Since We Last Met..

Eyes on Microsoft. Keep your eyes and ears open on the
latest MS antitrust issues in the Supreme Court. For the
uninitiated, this latest round has to do with integration of Internet
Explorer into Windows 98. Things are happening too fast for
even me to report in this column. The case is now under way
with bits and snatches, as well as major articles, appearing in
every newspaper in the country. As for MS, the old addage of
“Any publicity is good publicity” seems to be holding true. As
of Wednesday (01/14/98), shares in MS rose $2.63 to close at
$132.13 in Nasdaq trading. Butdon’texpectthisto be a trend.
I think you’ll see the value of shares ping-pong back and forth as
investors’ perception of who’s winning changes.

Eyes on Netscape. Netscape Communications Corp. said it
will be “down-sizing” to the tune of as many as 400 employees,
or about 13% of its 3,200-person workforce. Expecting to report
a fourth-quarter loss of $85-$89 million, when the company
issues its Jan. 27 earnings report, it is now struggling to
compete against Microsoft’s free Internet Explorer.

Eyes on the Web. Here’re some facts about the commercial
use of the Internet:
+ In 1993, there were 623 sites on the World Wide Web; by
1996, there were 650,000.
+ At the end of 1996, there were about 828,000 Internet
domain names. The number increased 33% in the following six
months.
+ San Francisco has more Internet and online service compa-
nies - 352 - than any other U.S. city.
+ Last month, 58 million adults in the U.S. and Canada were
online, a 15% increase from the previous six months.
+ In 1996, 760,000 Internet-related jobs were created in the
U.S., 1.1 million worldwide.
