VFP 6.0 Announcement

object-oriented framework allows programmers to more rapidly build menus, forms, installers, and other common development parts.
Exclusive to FoxPro among Microsoft’s Visual Studio tools suite is a new Component Gallery, which uses a visual interface similar to Windows Explorer to help developers catalog, locate, manage, and share application classes, widgets, and components.
The VFP 6.0 release also adds support for building multitier distributed applications, and leverages the company’s Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) to scale components at run time. The MTS support, along with better Active Server Pages (ASP) and Internet Information Server (IlS) integration, should help FoxPro developers exploit the new distributed and Web environments, Microsoft officials say.
To give developers more control over application performance, VFP 6.0 features an automatic coverage profiler that logs and times every line of code executed. The process, officials say, is fully automatic. “You just turn the logging on, and that’s it,” says Robert Green, Microsoft Visual FoxPro product manager. ‘It will find ‘dead’ code, and also flag those parts of your application that are consuming the most resources, in terms of performance.”
Honeywell used VFP to build and maintain one of the firm’s data Narehouses, which polls multiple SQL and mainframe data sources worldwide, filters and acquires updated data, cleans and normalizes it, and then makes it available to plant users though FoxPro application data tables running on a Windows desktop or through a Web browser.
‘Certain people in Honeywell would call me a renegade for using FoxPro to build a data warehouse,” Lanctot says. “But as far as rapid database application development goes, we’ve been able to run circles around other data warehousing development teams in other divisions.”
Pricing for the new tool has not been set.

Microsoft giveth and Microsoft taketh away. You get OOP in VFP, but you don’t get to OOP those spiffy little Data Environment setup things in forms. This utility extracts the info and creates a prg that contains a data enivironment class. For those of you who like to do things for yourself.

A code sample that answers the pressing question: just what is dynamicbackcolor for, anyway? This demo form illustrates a method of highlighting a single row on a grid object. Look at the custom method in the form and the keypress event in the grid textboxes.
