Since We Last Met...

“Anyone Taking Bets?” Department, Part 1. It looks like Microsoft

might be headed for some bumpy road in its quest to release Windows ‘98.

As The LA Fox Developer went to press, an article in The Seattle Times

stated that seventeen states are prepared to file a lawsuit accusing MS of

using its dominance in PC operating systems to control markets ranging

from Internet browsers to office productivity systems to electronic TV-guide

listings to E-mail programs. The states, including California, have decided

to file a lawsuit in US District Court at the same time the Justice Depart-

ment is expected to sue under the Sherman and Clayton antitrust acts.

Discussions between MS and govenment authorities have reached a

stalemate. As a result, federal and state antitrust prosecutors are poised

to seek an injunction aimed squarely at Windows 98 one day before it is

scheduled to be shipped. While these legal maneuverings won’t necessar-

ily prevent shipment of the product, they could force MS to make substan-

tial last-minute changes if a judge agrees to grant some of the demands

sought, including:

* MS to immediately provide computer makers the ability to substitute

other Internet browsers or immediately provide computer makers with

another version of Windows 98 withoutlE.

* MS to stop making Windows 98 licensing deals that force computer

makers to put on the computer's desktop certain items that give MS

special preference.

* MS to stop cutting deals with ISPs that require them to promote lE in

exchange for special access on MS’s referral pages.

Keep an eye on this one.

Apple Computer is trying to make a comeback with the iMac. Keep an

eye on this one, too.

Seinfield Who? I’ll really be glad when all the hype about the last

Seinfield episode is over and done with. But the show about nothing has

nothing on http://www.urban75.com/Mag/useless.html. If you go there,

make sure you check out the Useless Java Page. There’s one part of it

that’s kind of spooky.. .at least from a PC point of view.
