personal electronics,
has cre-
ated
a tremendous sense of
individual empowerment An
empowerment that imbues the
spirit and
opens
the mind to
creative and productive possi-
bilities. Computers
and
software
are “machines of the mind”; they
unburden us and open a thou-
sand
windows
and
doors
to
opportunity. They and their
personal electronic counter-
parts
are
great “equalizers”,
allowing the individual to
compete on a more even
footing with
industry
giants.
My contention is that people
will
put up with a relative lack
of material goods, but deny
them hope and
opportunity,
when it
is
right
there to be seen
and had,
just
on the other side
ofthatwall.

, and walls will
come down.
So there is the reason I think
that
“The
Woz” should be
credited with the fall of the
Berlin Wall, the fall of World
Communism
and the
coming
Pax
Romana
in the 21st century.
That little computer he pieced
together broke mental chains
around the globe.
Let
no one
accuse
you of not
being engaged in earth shaking
activities. Though you may
appear sedentary while contem-
plating the glow of your Multis-
ync; remember, that next line of
code
you write, that next idea
you have for a great software
product, may have global
ramifications beyond your
wildest imagination.
Ok, I'll admit that the inspira-
tion for this thesis came to me
while sipping Remy Martin
Cognac
and listening to “Com-
puter Incantations for World
Peace”
-
a beautiful, but lively,
musical
piece by Jean Luc Ponty
featuring an electronic violin
and a synthesizer. You
try
it and
see if you don’t have similar
revelations.
