The LA Fox
Developer Newsletter
May 1995
Out and About
(Con't from page 3)
I recently received my copy in the mail and all I can
say is, “It’s hot, hot, hot!!”. And this latest version
even has docs with it. A review will appear in next
month’s newsletter.
Member News. Stephen Bradford, of
Nuts & Bolts
Computer Consulting,
was the winner of our sur-
prise raffle last month. He, or should I say his six-
and eight-year-old children, are the proud new
“parents” of a bigger-than-lifesize DevCon Taz.
It was also suggested to me by one of our members
at the last meeting, that we start a “FoxPro
Q&A”
column. It seemed like a good idea, so if anyone
out there has questions to throw at us, we’ll try our
best to find some answers. Just to get things
started, I included some typical questions, from
another newsletter, in this issue. Questions may be
given to either Chuck Williams or Barry Lee at the
meetings, or they may be phoned in, or posted to us
on
CompuServe. (Our numbers are all over this
issue.)
I’ve received quite a number calls from headhunters
in the last few weeks looking for FoxPro developers
and programmers. Since I’m currently overloaded, I
had to refer these calls to other individuals in the
group. If you wish your name to be included in this
list of referrals, send your business card, along with
a very brief resume (and if you’re looking for full-
time or contract work),
to Barry R. Lee, Microcom-
puter Engineering Services, P.O. Box 6624, Hun-
tington Beach, CA 92615-6624. Or give it to me at
one of our meetings. Or drop me a line on
CompuServe. There’s absolutely no charge for the
referral (I’m one of those nice guys) and if it keeps
our members employed, so much the better. It’s
also one of the other benefits of belonging to LA
Fox.
Elsewhere....
The government has stepped in and blocked the
sale of
Intuit
(Quicken, Quick Books,
etc.) to
Microsoft. Since both Intuit and MS are in favor of
the sale, you can expect a long drawn-out appeal.
Flash Creative Management, in their latest news-
letter (“The Flash Consultant”), has announced

FoxPro Q&A
[Ed. Note: The following has been reprinted from
The Greater Rochester Fox User Group Newsletter in
response to a request from one of our members.
This is just to get your juices flowing. The original
column name, in their newsletter, is “FoxGeek” and
appears
on a regular basis. If you wish to see a
regular column like this in our newsletter or have any
questions you wish answered in print, submit your
responses or questions to Chuck Williams or Barry
Lee.]
Dear FoxGeek,
I have a routine in which I multiply a tax rate by a sales
amount, I
get a value with four digits to the right of the
decimal. I only want two
decimal places to show the tax
due. SET DECIMAL TO 2 and SET FIXED ON don’t
seem to work. What should I do?
—
Marcia Clark
Dear Marcy,
If your goal is to display the result with two decimal
places, use the PICTU RE clause of the SAY command.
If you plan on using or storing the result, use the
ROUNDO command.
Dear FoxGeek,
I am writing a program in both FPD2.5 and FPW2.5. I
can’t seem to get the ON SHUTDOWN command to
work in the DOS version. What am I doing
wrong?
—
Lance Ito
Dear Lance,
ON SHUTDOWN allows one to have code executed as
the application is closing down. This is important in
environments like Windows and the Mac, where exter-
nal events, like leaving Windows or shutting down the
Mac, force the application to close. ON SHUTDOWN
does not work in DOS and is really not needed.. In fact,
even the compiler rejects it. To get around that you
would need to implement the following code:
