November 17-21, 1997. Comdex ‘97, the big daddy of all computer trade
conferences, convenes in Las Vegas. The convention pulled in about
250,000 people last year, clogged up all the phone lines, and filled every
hotel in the area. If you’re going, you’d better start planning now.
Since We Last Met
To the Victor Go the Spoils.
Well, it had to happen someday. Apple
Corp., awash
in just about
every kind of trouble
imaginable from financial
problems to executives jumping ship, has been temporarily bailed out by
Microsoft Corp., thus ending the “platform wars” between Apple loyalists
and MStechies. Announced Wednesday, August6, 1997, duringthe
MacWorld Expo in Boston, the news of the $150 million infusion from
Microsoft brought shudders from some quarters. Microsoft, the largest
supplier of software for the Mac, stands to gain the most from the deal
since its Internet Explorer will now come bundled in the machines.
Microsoft also announced completion of the WebTV acquisition, further
entrenching itself in Internet applications. So, by my guess, the real loser
in this whole deal has to be Netscape.
On another front, here are some findings from research into bad smells,
according to the Olfactory Research Fund:
*
Our sense of smell is fully developed at birth.
*
Subjects exposed to an unpleasant odor while taking a creativity test
did worse than those breathing a pleasant fragrance.
*
People smelling a pleasant scent recalled more happy memories than
did people exposed to a bad smell.
*
Patients reported more symptoms of illness while exposed to a rotten-
vegetable odor than in the presence of a lemon fragrance.
(Ed. Note: I wonder who paid for this revealing study DUHHHHH!!!!)
